みなさま、
大変遅くなりましたが（と言うか1月も下旬ですが・・・）、明けましておめでとうございます。
皆さまは年末年始をどう過ごされましたか？
私は親友とその婚約者が遠いアメリカから遊びに来てくれて、一緒に楽しくガーナ中を回りました。ガーナの面白いところや魅力、問題点を再確認する旅でした。

I am very late on this (I know, January is almost over)… but Happy New Year!
How did you spend the holidays?
My best friend and her fiancé came all the way from the States to visit me, so
we spent a lovely time travelling around Ghana. It was a good trip to revisit
the interesting, amazing, and problematic faces of Ghana.

色々エピソードはあるものの、「That’s Ghana
（ガーナだね）」を一番分かりやすく説明できるのが最後に泊まったアクラのリゾートホテルでの経験。
ホテルに着いたら、満面の笑みで「お待ちしてました」と迎えられたものの、エキストラベッドの準備がされていないことに気付き慌てて手配。30分くらい経ってやっと部屋に案内されたら、きれいでいい匂いがして、さてシャワーを浴びようと思ったらタオルが2枚だけ。やっぱりタオルまでは気が利かなかったか・・・と思ったらトントンとノックがして、3枚目のタオルが登場。おお、気付いてくれたんだと思って扉を閉めたら、ロックが壊れていて。短時間での上がり下がりの多さに思わず3人で笑ってしまいました。
There are a lot of stories to share, but I think the best example
of “That’s Ghana” was our experience at the last hotel we stayed at in Accra.
When we got to the hotel, we were welcomed with a smile and
a warm “We were expecting you”, until they realized that they had forgotten to
set up the extra bed. 30 minutes later we were finally led to a cozy room with
a nice smell. I then got ready to shower when I realized there were only two
towels. So we were saying “hmm, guess they didn’t think of the towels”… when
there was a knock on the door and the third towel arrived. As we closed the
door impressed that they remembered, we realized that the lock was broken. The
three of us just had to laugh at all the ups and downs that happened in such a
short period!
ガーナで過ごした1年10ヶ月を考えると、本当にそんな毎日でした。嬉しいと思っていたらがっかりすることがあり。がっかりして期待しないようにすると、さりげない親切に触れてまた嬉しくなる。ガーナを知ったつもりでいると驚くようなことが起きてまだ何も知らないことを思い知らされる。でも、ときどきガーナに馴染んだと気付いて幸せに浸れるときもある。
Looking back at the 22 months that I have spent in Ghana so
far, every day was like this hotel experience. When you’re happy, something
disappoints you. When you get so disappointed and decide to lower your
expectations, somebody shows genuine kindness and your faith in humanity is
restored. You think you know Ghana well when something surprises you and you
are reminded that you still don’t know anything at all. But, there are also
moments when you can sit and feel content that you’ve become part of this
society.

旅行から帰ってワの自宅に戻ったら、仲良しのお友達が家に遊びに来てくれて何時間もお喋りし、近所の男の子たちから「家を出るときはちゃんと僕たちに言わないとひかるの家を守ってあげられない」と叱られ、留守番をしていた近所のおばさんの6歳くらいの息子さんが車から私を守ろうとしながらおばさんのお店まで案内してくれて、そのおばさんにお土産のビスケットをあげたらお返しにご飯をご馳走してくれて、夕方洗濯物を取りに外へ出たら空一面に美しい夕日が広がっていて・・・
When I came home to Wa from the trip, my good friend came to
my house and we chatted for hours. Some boys in the neighborhood came to scold
me for not informing them of my trip because they wanted to guard my house in
my absence. I was led to one of my neighbor’s shops by her son (around 6 years
old) who kept trying to protect me from cars. Once I got there and gave my
neighbor biscuits from my trip, she gave me rice for free. I went outside again
in the evening to pick my clothes and saw a beautiful sunset outside…
嫌なこともいっぱいあったし、バカなことや失敗もいっぱいしたけれど、私はここで確かに2年間過ごし、自分なりの生活を築くことができ、それは私の大きな自信となりました。
たくさんの葛藤や経験を通じて、ガーナは私に「わたし」を教えてくれました。
自分が何を大事にし、どう生きたいのかを教えてくれました。
My time here was not rosy throughout, and I definitely did
some really stupid things and made lots of mistakes, but I stand here today
knowing that I was able to spend 2 years here and create my own lifestyle here,
and that thought gives me confidence.
Through many struggles and experiences, Ghana taught me who “I”
am.
It taught me what I consider to be important, and how I want to live.
今年、わたしは30歳になります。3月の帰国後には新しい道に進むことも決めています。私生活でも仕事でも、いろいろと新しいことが始まる年になりそうです。
昨年までたっぷり時間を使って自分と向き合った分、今年は自分のスキルも弱点も全て人の役に立つようなエネルギーに変えられればと思っています。
2014年が皆様にとって素晴らしい一年になりますように。

This year I will be turning 30 years old. I’ve decided on a
new career path after my return home in March. It seems that there will be a
lot of new beginnings this year, both in my personal life and in my career.
Last year I spent plenty of time facing myself, so this
year, I hope that I will be able to use my strengths and weakness and turn my
energy outwards to be useful and helpful to others.
May 2014 be a wonderful year for you all.
