Initial Days in Wa / ワにて、初期の日々

It has only been 2-3 days since I got to Wa, but I would like to jot down a few things that I've felt so far.

First of all, about my host family. My situation is a little special in that I don't really have a "Host Father" or "Host Mother". Basically, the eldest son of a large famliy is my "Host Father" and the eldest daughter is the "Host Mother". The eldest son is however in the capital for business, so I'm actually being taken care of by the eldest daughter and her siblings. Their mother and step-mother seem to be living in the same house as well, but the situation seems complicated so I haven't asked details.

ワに着いてまだ2，3日ほどしか経っていませんが、今のところ感じたことを少し書いておきたいと思います。

まず、ホストファミリーについて。私の状況はちょっと特殊で、「ホストファザー」「ホストマザー」がいません。正確に言うと、大家族の長男が「ホストファザー」、長女が「ホストマザー」という感じです。長男は現在仕事のため首都にいるので、実質的には長女さんとその他の兄妹達のお世話になっています。お母様や継母様も一緒に暮らしているのですが、状況が複雑なようなので詳しくは聞いていません。

The eldest daughter, Nafisa, is a college student and a strong woman leading the family. I haven't talked much to the second daughter but she's very cute. The third daughter is in charge of most of the household chores, and is constantly washing dishes, cleaning and doing other work. The fourth girl is shy and the brothers hardly come close. There are also triplets (two girls, one boy) around 6-years old, who are crazy and so fun to watch.

長女のナフィーサは学生さんですが、とてもしっかりしていて家族を引っ張っています。次女とはあまり話せていませんが可愛らしい子です。三女は家事全般を引き受けている働き者で、常に食器を洗ったり掃除したりと働いています。四女はシャイで弟たちはほとんど寄ってきません。更に下には6歳くらいの三つ子（男の二人、女の子一人）がいるのですが、この子たちがやんちゃで見ているだけで楽しくなります。

The first picture is of Sharifa (the third daughter) washing clothes, with Nafisa and two of the triplets behind her. (By the way, I also handwashed my clothes today using basins. It takes a long time, but the feeling of accomplishment after finishing is nice.)

最初の写真は三女のシャリーファがお洗濯している後ろにナフィーサと三つ子さんがの内二人がいます。（因みに私も自分の洗濯物をタライで手洗いしました。時間は掛かりますが終わった後の充実感は気持ちがいいです。）

Since Easter holidays continued til Monday and I couldn't go say hi to my assigned NGO I thought I would be bored, but not quite so. In the morning, I eat breakfast and usually take a walk in the neighborhood or play with children. Starting today I have 3-hour local Dagaare/Walle language lessons as well. However, the biggest reason why I have not been bored so far is mostly thanks to a very helpful man, Sam.

Sam is the young guy who I wrote about on my blog yesterday that picked me up with his bike, but later I found out that he is actually the son of the Walla Chief (the Walla is the biggest ethnic group in Wa). I thought that I would not see him after Saturday, but the next day I got a call with a "Let's go out", and he came to pick me up on his bike. And today, he came again in the afternoon, this time in a car.

今週の月曜日までイースター休暇が続いたため、配属先のNGOにご挨拶も行くことができず暇になるかと思いましたが、そうでもありません。午前中は朝ご飯を食べてから、大体近所を散歩したり子供たちと遊んでいます。今日からは3時間の語学レッスンも始まりました。でも、暇にならないで済んでいるのは恐らく協力な助っ人、サムさんのかげです。

サムさんは昨日ブログで書いたバイクで迎えに来てくれたお兄さんのことですが、なんと後で聞いたらこの人はワラ族（ワの大半を占める部族）の長の息子さんでした。土曜日の夜に迎えに来てもらってそれっきりかと思っていたら、次の日に電話が掛かってきて「出かけるよ」と言われ、バイクで迎えに来ました。そして、今日も(今度は車で）午後また出かけました。

To be honest, I was a little hesitant about going out with some guy I don't really know, but the host family trusts him and I figured I should give it a try. He ended up taking me to various places and introduced me to many, many people. I already stand out in the town as a rare Nansara (White person), but I stood out even more riding around on a bike with the Chief's son. Of course word goes out that "Sam is taking around a Nansara!" and a lot of people came out just to see or say hi.

When I asked why he takes me to all these places, he says this is a way of protecting me. Truth be told, if people know that I'm friends with the Chief's son it's hard to mess with me. Even though Wa is the regional capital, it is still a small community so the people's eye is the biggest tool for safety. Thanks to him, I got to meet a lot of people so at least there are a few that would say hi or care about how I am doing. He also said "Not everyone is a nice person, so you should trust the people that I introduced to you." Indeed.

Sam also teaches me a lot about African culture and politics, and he not only teaches me words in Walle but quizzes me later to make sure I remember. He is very serious inside, loves Africa and talks about how he wants to make Wa a better place. If what he says is true he is around 20 years old, but when I said I'm 27 he said "27?! Then you must be married", and further stated "Why would you not be married at 27". Ouch... so I came up with an "Oh, I have a boyfriend but he's far away now" but... I suppose it is a little late to be single under African standards.

正直言うと、よく知らないお兄さんといきなり行くのはどうなのだろう、と不安もありましたが、ホストファミリーの人たちが彼を信頼していることもありついて行ってみたところ、様々なところに連れて行かれ、たくさんの人たちに紹介されました。街で珍しいナンサーラ（白人）というだけでなく、族長の息子とバイクに乗りまわっているのでますます目立ち、「サムがナンサーラを連れている！」と見に来る人や挨拶しに来る人もしばしば。

なぜ色々連れて行ってくれるのかあとで聞くと彼はこうやって私を守っているのだと言いました。確かに、族長の息子の知り合いとなると、そんなに変なこともしにくいです。それに、いくら州都であってもかなり小さいコミュニティなので、人の目が一番の安全です。彼のおかげで色々なところに知り合いができたので、少なくとも声をかけて気にしてくれる人は増えました。また「みんながいい人ではないから、僕が紹介した人たちを優先的に信頼した方がいい」ということでした。なるほど。

因みにサムさん、アフリカ文化や政治についても色々教えてくれ、言葉も教えるだけでなく私が覚えているかどうかテストしてきます。アフリカ愛が本当に強くて、将来はワをより良い街にしたいと熱く語る真面目な若者です。彼の言うことが本当であればまだ20歳くらいなのですが、私が27歳であると告げると「27歳？じゃあ結婚してるの？」となり、「27歳で結婚していないなんてありえない」というズキッとくるお言葉を頂きました・・・　仕方がないので「彼氏はいるけど、今は遠いから」ということにしておきましたが・・・　アフリカン・スタンダードからいけば確かに遅いのでしょうね。

I am usually back home before sunset, so I try to spend the lazy, post-dinner hours with my host family. Well, it's more like I just join in the siblings gathering, but I enjoy star-gazing while absent-mindedly sitting and listening to the voices of everyone else talking to each other. I'm actually really good at being lazy since childhood, so sitting like this calms me down and reminds me of those familiar days from the past.

大体夕方にはお家に帰るようにしていますが、お夕飯の後ののんびりした時間はなるべくホストファミリーと過ごすようにしています。と言っても、兄妹の団欒の中に加えてもらうというだけですが、外で星空を見ながら周りが楽しそうに話す声をぼーっと聞いているのも結構好きです。もともと、子供の頃からぼーっとしているのは得意だったので、なんとなく懐かしいあの頃に戻った様な、落ち着いた気分になります。

I wrote a lot but as you can tell, I am doing well here. Starting tomorrow I will spend more time at the NGO, will have more language lessons, and Nafisa says that she will teach me how to make local food in the evenings so I feel my days will be even more fulfilling. I hope to be able to introduce the language, food and culture bit by bit.

長くなりましたが、私はこの様に元気に過ごしています。明日からは配属先で過ごす時間が少し増えて、また語学レッスンも続き、更に夕方からはナフィーサが現地料理の作り方を教えてくれると言うので、ますます充実した日々が続きそうです。言語や食事、文化など少しずつ紹介していければと思っています。
