At the JICA Dormitory / JICAのドミトリーにて

Dear readers,

After spending a few days in a hotel, we moved to the official JICA volunteer dormitory last weekend. It is a large building not too far from the JICA office specifically meant to house JICA volunteers that are working in Ghana when they need a place to stay in Accra. This first picture is how the dormitory looks from outside.

ホテルで数日過ごした後、先週末JICAのボランティア専用宿舎（通称：ドミトリー）に引っ越しました。JICA事務所からそんなに遠くないところにあって、ガーナに派遣されているボランティアがアクラに泊まるときに使える宿舎となっています。最初の写真は外から見たドミトリーの様子です。

The dorm is equipped with basic necessities, but personally the best parts are the kitchen and bookshelves. There are many books that past volunteers have left behind (some new some old) and so I haven't been really bored during the night. It's also really nice to have a kitchen and to be able to cook. Ghanaian food is tasty but very oily, so I am trying not to eat too much at once. There are many stores across the street from the dormitory, so it's easy to buy vegetables and canned goods too. 

ドミには基本的なものが全て揃っていますが、個人的なお気に入りはキッチンと本棚です。ボランティアの先輩方が残していかれた本（古いものも新しいものも）がたくさんあるので夜あまり暇をしないで済んでいます。台所でお料理ができるのも救いです。ガーナ料理は美味しいのですがとても脂っこいので一度にたくさん食べないようにしています。幸いドミのある通りの向かい側には小さなお店がいっぱい並んでいるので野菜や缶類を買うことができます。

Our orientation usually ends in the afternoon and we try to get back to the dormitory before dark, which means we have a lot of free time on our hands during the night... Here are my two colleagues enjoying their leisure time.

私たちのオリエンテーションは大抵午後に終わって、日が暮れる前にはドミに戻るようにしているので自由時間がたくさんあります。同僚さんお二人が自由時間をまったり過ごしている瞬間を撮ってみました。

This picture is of a turkey (yes, a live turkey!) that I found sauntering around the street yesterday... My colleague thinks that perhaps our neighbor bought him to eat for Easter this weekend... 

この写真は昨日たまたま見かけた七面鳥（本物！）です。同僚の推測ではイースターのお食事のためにお隣さんが買ったのではないか、とのこと・・・

We take a public van called a Tro Tro from the dormitory to the office usually, but apparently it is possible to walk on the railroad for about 30 minutes as well. The trains only run in the morning and evening so during the day everybody uses walks on it freely.

ドミトリーからオフィスまでは通常「トロトロ」と呼ばれる乗合バンの様なものに乗っていくのですが、線路を辿って30分くらいかけて歩くことも可能らしいです。電車は朝と夕方しか走らないので、日中は人が自由に歩いています。

That's all for today. Starting this Friday I will finally be heading to Wa for a two-week homestay program, so I should be able to write more about the actual place that I will be living and working in!
